A former Au-Zn-Ag-Cu-Pb-Sb mine located in the SE¼ sec. 1, T3N, R14E, MDM, about 6 km E of Murphys and 1.8 km (1.1 miles) W of Stanislaus (Stanislaus County, W of the Stanislaus River (4 miles E of Murphys and 1 mile SW of the powerhouse). Discovered in 1878. Operated almost continually until 1899. ACTIVE 1925 - 1926. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
NOTE: USGS MRDS database file #10102615 presents geographic coordinates of 120.71684W, 37.92185N, and places this mine in sec. 24, T1N, R11E, while the other 2 MRDS files place it in 120.39W and 38.13N, in sec. 1, T3N, R14E, MDM. The commonality of much of the other data in file #10102615 with those in the other 2 files strongly indicates that file #10102615 is concerned with the same mine and that the geographic coordinates and T&R values are in error.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in rocks of the Calaveras Group (siliceous slate ?), which strike almost W. The ore body strikes W and dips 80N. The main vein has dark-colored quartz. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range).
Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 53.34 meters, and comprised of a 175 foot shaft & over 400 feet of drifts, 7 W-trending drift adits from 140 to 400 feet long and related raises and winzes. Drilled by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1944. Two holes were drilled. Both holes disclosed the presence of Zn, Cu, Au & Ag, but no commercial ore was intersected. (per MRDS file #10102615: An inclined shaft at 51 degrees with levels at 56, 124 & 167 feet. An abandoned shaft lies 150 feet SE of the main shaft. Over 400 feet of drifts.)
