A former Au mine located 2.6 mile NNE of Waxhaw and 3 miles NW of Mineral Springs, at approx. N34.95837 W80.72081, on private land. The gold was located in 1839. The mine was started in 1840 and was operated with interruptions till 1942. Up to 100 miners were employed and it yielded about 50,000 ounces of Au plus some Ag. It was one of the largest producers in North Carolina.

Mineralization is hosted in a dark colored argillaceous slate, usually highly silicified. Local rocks include rocks of the Cid Formation; metamudstone and meta-argillite.

Workings include underground openings comprised of several shafts up to 400 feet deep. Remains of the installations are still visible but they are on private land and are not accessible without permit.

The first discovery of gold in North Carolina was in 1799 at the farm of John Reed in Cabarrus County. About 180 mines in North Carolina are described in the readily available literature, but surveys in 1936 and 1993 listed about 700 former gold mines mostly in the Piedmont.
