One of the oldest lead mines in Derbyshire and possibly the UK, it is believed (although not documented) that lead was first extracted during roman times. The documented record goes as far back as 1280 and it was certainly worked for lead during the 17th century. It was originally mined by means of lighting huge fires under the ground, allowing them to burn overnight and then subjecting the heated rock to water to force it to crack. The workings extend to 500 metres into the hillside and are on three stepped levels connected by vertical shafts. The mine ceased work sometime around 1870.
