Cachuma Quicksilver District


A former Hg-Cr (Cu-Au-Ag) mining area located at the head of Cachuma Creek, 12 miles NE of Santa Ynez, about 12 miles E of Los Olivas, and 23 miles NE of Solvang.

Mineralization is a series of deposits which occur in fault zones of the Great Valley sequence shales that have been intruded by serpentinized ultramafic rocks. Cinnabar occurs as open space fillings or is disseminated in the fracture zones.

Intermittent Hg production from 1867 to 1946.

The Cachuma quicksilver district, near the center of Santa Barbara County, California, is principally in the headwater region of Cachuma Creek in the San Rafael Mountains of the California Coast Ranges. The heart of the district is on the western flank of Cachuma Mountain...extends southward into the drainage area of Cachuma Creek and northward into the upper part of Davy Brown Canyon.
