Yuhas No. 1 Feldspar Mine
Granite pegmatite, Alstead field.
Joseph and Elizabeth Yuhas (immigrants from Hungary in 1904) acquired 150 acres (130 acres in Acworth, Sullivan Co. and an adjacent 20 acres in Cheshire Co.) from John W. Prentiss on 5 February 1923 (Sullivan County Registry of Deeds {SCRD}, Book 209 Page 569). On 27 September 1927, Joseph Yuhas and his wife leased mineral rights on 150 acres to C. B. Martin of Gilsum, NH, and W. B. Ewing of Albany, NY (SCRD, Book 228 Pages 485-487). Martin and Ewing formed American Mineral Products Company (Hartford, CT) which is reflected in the next lease on 14 February 1929 (Cheshire County Registry of Deeds, Book 436 Page 526). The lease changed hands several times to General Minerals Corporation (NY), Seaboard Minerals Corporation (NY) and Cold River Minerals Inc. (NH). Tracing the ownership is complicated by the long string of companies, multiple leases and the occasional spelling of "Yuhas" as "Gahase." The property was quitclaimed to the children (2 sons, 4 daughters) of Joseph and Elizabeth Yuhas on 18 April 1942 (SCRD, Book 280 Page 48). The property was purchased 19 August 1958 by Winslow H. Neal and Helen Yuhas Neal (Joseph's daughter) (SCRD Book 397 Pages 513-514). See also Cameron et al. (1954:291-295).
An opencut 140 feet long, 115 feet wide, and 12 to 65 feet deep, and underground workings that were 100 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 20 to 30 feet high, and extended southward from the floor of the cut, had been made prior to November 1944. Another cut 110 feet long, 32 feet wide and 2 to 17 feet deep lies 135 feet east of the larger cut.
