The Mociços Mine, in the Alandroal region of Central Alentejo, is one of several former copper workings in the Sousel–Barrancos Metallogenic Belt. It consists of a quartz and carbonate vein rich in copper, hosted in Paleozoic detrital metasedimentary rocks of the Ossa-Morena Zone (SW Portugal), and was exploited in the early 20th century.
The mining operation took place on three levels and in addition to open pit work (open pit and trenches), in more than 300 meters of galleries.
The first level of the mine was sealed due to the advance of water from the Alqueva dam.
This mine is home to, perhaps the most important in Europe, a community of bats of the species Myotis Myotis.
