Introduction
An underground copper mine consisting of 96 levels with 16 incline shafts and one vertical shaft (Red Jacket).
History
Formed from the consolidation of the Calumet, Hecla, Portland, and Scott Mining Companies in 1871. In 1923, the Allouez, Ahmeek, Centennial, Calumet and Hecla, and Osceola Mining Companies merged to form the Calumet and Hecla Consolidated Copper Mining Company. All operations ceased in 1968 following a labor strike. Excellent mineral collecting at Shafts 9, 10, and 12.
For the Collector
Copper included agates can be found at Shaft 21.
Note: coordinates given are a central point in the mining complex. Shafts extend along strike for approximately two miles.
