Gipsabbau Haringgraben, Tragöß-Sankt Katharein, Bezirk Bruck-Mürzzuschlag, Steiermark, Österreich
A large gypsum quarry/mine, located in the upper Laming valley.
Currently owned by the Knauff Co.
The quarry was in operation since the 18th century. In 1817 the stamp mill (Gipsstampfe) in Tragöss produced 1 Startin per day (= 525 liter = approx. 1200 kg = approx. 375 metric tons per year). Up to 3 stamp mills were working in Tragöss.
The gypsum body measured approx. 1.5 km in length with a thickness of approx 50 m. The material contained 70 to 93 % gypsum.
The quarry was operated with interruptions into the 21th century. The large scale industrial production of gypsum was started in 1967.
First the gypsum was mainly used for plaster, (decorative plaster, stucco, Stuckatur), later it was also used in fertilizers and for the cement industry, now it is largely used for building products like plaster boards, thermal insulation boards etc.
