A carbonate-hosted syngenetic MVT Pb-Zn deposit, discovered in 1978 and mined from 1984 to 2002 by BHP Billiton.
The zinc-lead deposit at Pering is located 70 kilometres southwest of Vryburg and 20 kilometres northeast of Reivilo, in the North West Province. The area between Vryburg and Reivilo has no history of base metal mining and very little exploration took place prior to the Pering discovery by Shell South Africa Minerals Division in 1978.
Zinc and lead mineralisation occurs in flat-lying carbonates of the Lower Proterozoic Reivilo Formation. Mineralisation occurs in both narrow (5-10m) extensively developed stratabound horizons ("tabular ore") and in thicker (up to 60m) cross-cutting breccia zones ("breccia ore"). In broad terms the Pering deposit can be classified as Mississippi Valley-type. Ore mineral assemblages are simple and consist of sphalerite, galena, minor pyrite and chalcopyrite. No other primary sulphides are known. Sphalerite commonly occurs finely disseminated, typical of the tabular mineralisation associated with stratabound stromatolitic dolomite, and as irregular crusts and masses associated with rubble breccias. Euhedral to subhedral gemmy honey-coloured crystals are found within small cavities, often associated with well-formed, cream-coloured dolomite crystals and small clear quartz crystals.
Galena is commonly found in cross-cutting veinlets and associated with the more massive sphalerite as coarse-grained galena masses. This type is associated with rubble breccia and open-space filling together with colloform sphalerite. Pyrite is ubiquitous yet generally a very minor constituent of the mineralised dolomite. It occurs as framboids and irregular aggregates up to 1cm in size but is also present as very fine disseminations within the dolomite as minute cubes, octahedra and spherules.
