A former surface and underground Cu-Pb-Au-Ag-Zn mine located on 11 patented claims about 1 mile SW of Walker, at 6,500 feet of altitude. Owned by W.I. Casey (1898)and, The Sheldon Mining Co. Produced 1935-1954. Claims extend into secs. 20 & 30; and into sec. 31, T12.5N, R2W. Also designated / known as: Patented claims 283, 2401 and 1556.
Mineralization is a vein deposit with a tabular and/or pinch and swell ore body(ies) hosted in the SW portion of a granodiorite area; more than ½ mile (about 1 km) outcrop. The vein pinches and swells but the average is 4 or 5 feet thick. The principal oreshoot pitches 60º northward and is reported to be 16 feet wide by 700 feet long on the 650 level. The deposit is a normal fissure vein with a strike of N.30ºE. and the dip is 81ºSE near surface but flattens to 70º with depth. A parallel vein in the hanging wall is the "Capitol vein." Chalcopyrite-galena ore. Mineralization also includes some unspecified supergene copper minerals in the oxidized zone. Ore control was faulting, shearing and igneous activity. Ore concentration was oxidation at near surface. Alteration was minor. An associated rock unit is the informally named Walker Stock or Walker Granodiorite and the Government Canyon Granodiorite.
Area structures include veins sometimes parallel regional foliation in Precambrian country rocks, which trends N10E to N40E.
Major workings include the 8,400 foot long Sheldon tunnel (old Poland tunnel). There is a 650 foot deep vertical shaft (prior to 1922), plus several hundreds of feet of drifts on the 250, 450 & 650 levels. The shaft was deepened to 1,280 feet (1925-1930), plus several thousands of feet of development work.
