Chippewa County is underlain mostly by Cambrian sandstones. Complex Precambrian rocks, including gneiss, amphibolites and granites are exposed along the Chippewa River and its tributaries. These rocks show graphically the effects of the Penokean Orogeny which occurred about 1.80 billion years ago. A few Keweenawan (1.1 billion year old) intrusions cut these rocks, as are well exposed at Wissota Dam near Chippewa Falls. Flambeau Ridge, on the northern edge of the County, is a folded outlier of Proterozoic quartzite and meta-conglomerate. The northern part of the County is covered by young Wisconsinan drift of the Chippewa Moraine. A major segment of Wisconsin's Ice Age Trial passes through the County, and includes an excellent visitor center devoted to Wisconsin's glacial heritage. The southern part of the county was not glaciated as recently, hence Cambrian bedrock crops out more frequently. Glacial drift in the County can provide some interesting samples to the diligent collector, including "float" copper, banded iron formation and "Lake Superior" agates.
