The Grøsli mine (also known as Grøslid Mine or Steensrup's Kiisgrube), located 3 km north of Lampeland, is an abandoned open-pit mine measuring approximately 25 x 15 meters with a depth of 4–8 meters. Its primary ore was pyrrhotite, with significant pyrite content (30–35%), along with minor sphalerite and chalcopyrite. The mine is situated within a quartz-dioritic gneiss, close to its contact with a large body of coarse-grained metagabbro.

Mining at Grøsli reportedly began around 1790, locally known as the Kahn-prospect. Between 1805 and 1815, during the closure of the Kongsberg Silver Mines, Paul Steensrup (1772–1864) initiated mining operations. Steensrup, who later founded the Kongsberg Weapon Factory, utilized zinc from the mine for color pigment production.

Notably, subhedral to euhedral pyrite cubes up to 15 cm in size have been observed embedded in the pyrrhotite ore (Craig et al., 1998). While pyrite crystals are abundant in the mine dumps, they are often heavily weathered and oxidized, leading to their disintegration (Larsen 2025).
