In an area of c. 30 x 35 km there over 100 volcanic necks, around 60 of which outcrop, others are known from boreholes and aeromagnetic data (Tappe 2004; Rehfeldt et al. 2007). The majority are between 70 and 200 min diameter, form prominent steep-sided hills and many are columnar-jointed.
Ar/Ar study of whole-rock samples from 9 necks by Bergelin et al. (2011) indicates emplacement in 3 periods: 191-178, c.145 and c.110 Ma.
