The Detroit Salt mine is located under the city of Detroit, a major city in the state of Michigan. It is currently owned by the Kissner Group and has two shafts, one that is 1160 feet and another that is 1400 feet.

The Detroit Salt and Manufacturing Company was founded in 1906, although halite was discovered on the site in 1895. Unfortunately, the company went bankrupt before it even had the chance of extracting the salt, due to the high cost of sinking the shaft.

After a reorganization in 1910 (Detroit Salt Company), the shaft was extended to 1060 feet under the city of Detroit and in 1912 the Watkins Salt Company purchased the mine and now the organization was called the Detroit Rock Salt Company. With the second reorganization the shaft was extended another 100 feet down to a second salt bed.

The Watkins Salt Company did not hold the mine for long, as its competitor, the International Salt Company, purchased the mine in 1914. The salt that was extracted was used primarily for the food processing and leather industries.

In 1922, a second shaft was drilled to meet the demand of more salt. This second shaft became the shaft that hauled the equipment down to the mine. Equipment was disassembled at the top and then reassembled at the bottom. This shaft is used today, while the first one is used to haul materials and labor.

International Salt closed the Detroit mine in 1983 and was purchased by Crystal Mines Inc. two years later in 1985. Another turnover to the Detroit Salt Company, LLC in 1997 saw the mine being reopened. In 2010, the Kissner Group purchased the Detroit Salt Company, LLC, and the two companies continued to operate the Detroit Mine until 2020, when it was purchased by Stone Canyon Industries Holdings, LLC.

Today the mine is currently active. The salt is used mostly for deicing roads in the Great Lakes region.
