Parc Arqueològic Mines de Gavà


A group of some 100 Neolithic (5800–5700 BP) mines extending to depths of 15m exploiting the variscite (Roman and Middle age mining exploited iron).
6,000 years ago, a group of settlers were drilling the earth to create a network of mines of 200 hectares, to extract a mysterious green colored mineral, variscite, which they used to make jewelry.
Beneath the city, the Neolithic mines of Gavà are the oldest gallery mines in Europe, dedicated to the exploitation of variscite. The miners reused some cavities to bury the dead, accompanied by rich hoards of objects arrived from remote places, through exchanges, and attracted by the variscite. And also to leave everyday waste there, of incalculable value to get to know what the communities that lived in Gavà were like in the Neolithic and what the landscape that surrounded them was like. A unique and reference site in Europe, declared a cultural asset of national interest (BCIN) by the Generalitat de Catalunya, where even today excavations are carried out in search of "treasures". Gavà Mines Archaeological Park shows some of these mines to the visitors. You could visit the Gavà Museum, near the mines park.
