Copper and nickel mine, periodically active from 1691 to 1919.
Due to the ores nickel content the resulting copper became brittle and only after re-smelting several times it could be sold at acceptable prices.
Only in 1838 when they sent ore samples to Berzelius for analyse and by chance it was a richer sample (3%Ni) he encouraged the management to produce the new metal. After many years (~1860) of development a saleable product was introduced and the profit had even payed the many years of investment. Due to the discoveries of new nickel ores abroad the metal prices dropped so they closed in 1889. Production was restarted in 1914-1919 due to import problems during WWI.
Different sources indicate different ore grades- Bredberg 2% and von Post 2-2,25%Ni . Copper grades are lousy; best is the one from Berzelius (0.45%).
Located in gabbro. The mine is 105m deep.
