Palazuelo de las Cuevas, San Vicente de La Cabeza, Comarca de Aliste, Zamora
The phosphate deposits of Palazuelo de las Cuevas are part of a set of mineralizations located in levels of siliceous materials of the volcano-sedimentary series of Silurian age belonging to the mega-tectonic structure of the Synform of Saelices.
The mineralizations are associated exactly with levels of lydites and cherts and have two types of morphology corresponding to two stages in its formation.
1st - Stratiform. Formed by small levels concordant with silicate rocks presenting massive, lamellar and nodular (oncolites) structures corresponding to a primary syngenetic-diagenetic origin and with input from phosphor of exhalative-sedimentary origin.
2nd - In veins. Form small fillings in fractures or cracks in the siliceous rocks or within quartz veins corresponding to a second phase of remobilization related to a second-stage diagenetic association of hydrothermal phenomena.
The principal mineral of this deposit is variscite which was mined in prehistoric times and for making ornaments.
This site can be included within the large mineralogical-historical interest.
