Pigeon Point is a rocky ridge that extends into Lake Superior north of Grand Portage near the Canadian border. As part of an extensive study of gabbros in Minnesota, Alexander N. Winchell sampled a Keweenawan-age (1.1 billion year old) gabbro dike at "the extremity of Pigeon Point". He described from it an unusual pyroxene which he termed, in a footnote in his 1900 article, "pigeonite".
