A salt deposit/mine located 7.0 km (4.3 miles) S of Hockley. South of US 290 at Hockley, on private land (private lease). Discovered in 1906 by Patillo Higgins. First production occurred in 1932. Owned & operated by the United Salt Corporation (100%), Texas (1979). Operated by United Salt Corporation (salt) and the Hockley Gypsum Company (gypsum). Owned by the John Warren estate. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. Also includes abandoned gypsum mine. Sulfur was found in an oil test in 1907.
Mineralization is a salt & gypsum deposit (Mineral occurrence model: information: Model code: 255; USGS model code: 35a.7 (35ag); Deposit model name: Salt-dome sulfur), hosted in Middle Jurassic limestone and the Louann salt. The ore body has a depth-to-top of 23.16 meters. The depth to caprock is 76 feet and to the salt it is 1,010 feet. Salt volume was calculated at 5.9 cubic miles to 10,560 feet of depth. First production of salt was 1932 and of gypsum it was 1944. Local alteration includes the biogenic alteration of anhydrock to limestone. Local rocks include rocks of the Willis Formation.
Local geologic structures include a piercement salt dome.
Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 464.82 meters. Salt was mined by a room and pillar method. Gypsum was mined at the 200 foot level through a 234 foot shaft. Tidewater Gypsum Company drilled 9 exploration wells and sunk the shaft in 1928. It was later deepened in 1944 by the Hockley Gypsum Company which drilled 15 more wells for gypsum. The mill had a capacity of 100,000 tons of salt per year.
Analytical data results: Gypsum ore mined generally exceeded 95% gypsum.
