Ordinary chondrite (H4)
Find, 1910; 2.7 kg
A single 2.7 kg stone was recovered on the farm Schaap-Kooi SE of Fraserburg. Some unusually chromite-rich chondrules have been observed. Compositionally, bulk iron contents (26.32 wt% Fe), mostly equilibrated olivine (Fa19), and nearly equilibrated low Ca-pyroxene are characteristic of H-group chondrites. Mineralogically the meteorite consists primarily of dominant olivine accompanied by pyroxene along with minor plagioclase, troilite, and Fe-Ni metal. Accessory chromite and minor copper, ilmenite, and other sulfides have also been reported.
An unusually ancient U,Th:He gas release age of t= 4.56 Ga indicates that Schaap-kooi meteoroid was largely sequestered from of the residues of catastrophic collisions suffered by so many meteorites during the long interval between formation on a putative ancient original parent body and their eventual entry into the earth's atmosphere as a very small meteoroid and an even smaller recovered meteorite.
The main mass has been held at the South African Museum in Capetown.
