Ordinary chondrite, black (L5; S6)
Find, 1950; 8.18 kg
A meteoritic stone was found. Inspections reveal chondrules and chondrule fragments within a shock-darkened matrix with moderately well-equilibrated silicates. Compositionally, the olivine and low Ca-orthopyroxene ('hypersthene') are characteristic of the L-chondrite chemical group. Mineralogically, the meteorite consists primarily of olivine accompanied by orthopyroxene along with minor troilite and Fe-Ni metal. Fe-Ni metal has been disturbed and exhibits plessitic and martensitic regions due to roughly 0.5 Mb pressure and attendant heating and melting. Accessory chromite and minor sulfides are also reported. Goethite is specifically noted as a terrestrial weatherate.
A U-He age of 322 Ma, a K-Ar age of 490 Ma, and a cosmic ray exposure CRE age of t ~15.6 Ma, are reported. The U-He and K-Ar ages are consistent with a major collision which is believed to have involved a very large fragment of the current L chondrite producing meteoroids ~500 Ma BP.
The largest mass has been kept at United States National Museum in Washington [1.7kg remained in 2000].
