Southernmost municipality in Europe, just north of the Gibraltar Strait.

Tertiary sedimentary terrain poor in well-developed crystals but rich in coastal rocky landscape with interesting geology. Piedra de Tarifa (Tarifa stone*) slabs are famous at the region from Roman times.

*bioclastic limestone in centimetric layers from an Oligocene flysh sequence.
