The Butcher Well Gold Mine is approximately 5 kilometres north-west of the old Linden town site. It consists of four abandoned north-south trending open pits, from the north being Butcher Well North, Butcher Well, Hronsky, and Enigmatic pits.
The deposit was discovered by Mount Burgess Gold Mining Co NL around 1993, and was developed soon after. Mining came to a premature end in March 1994, due to geological problems at the mine, and it was sold to Sons of Gwalia.
Saracen is noted as conducting more mining at the pits in 2013. The company also owns the nearby Red October mine. Ore from both are hauled along a specially constructed road, 120 kilometres south to the Carouse Dam processing plant. The company conducts mining from several deposits between, but is in the Menzies shire and not part of this goldfield.
Butcher Bird is said to have a similar geology to the Red October deposit. Gold is found in a brittle-ductile dextral shear zone, forming a contact between and ultramafic and mafic unit. The ultramafic rocks are altered to a silica-biotite-calcite-pyrite-arsenopyrite assemblage, and mafic rocks to biotite.
