The Challenger Gold Mine is 25 kilometres south of the Bronzewing Gold Mine, with the Dragon mine to the south and Parmelia mine to the north. It consists of two small open pits (Challenger North and South).
Navigator Resources developed the open pits between 2008 to 2011, and was used as supplementary ore for the under-performing Central pit at Bronzewing. Navigator went into administration in March 2013, and mining on the goldfield stopped at this time.
Navigator stated in 2012 total JORC resources at Challenger as 0.28 Mt at 1.7 g/t yielding 15 Koz (with 0.8 g/t cut-off).
The deposit is just west of the Mount McClure Fault. Geology is similar to the Parmelia and Success mines. There is a weak to moderately graphitic felsic cherty tuff, overlain by foliated fine grained chloritic metasedimentary rocks. There are also metabasalt units and thin metadolerite intrusions.
The Footwall is strongly foliated, metamorphosed dactitic felsic volcanic/volcaniclastic rocks. Gold is associated with numerous quartz veins with minor carbonate-chlorite veins up to 10 cms thick, sub-parallel to the foliation. The veins are commonly boundinaged and/or folded.
Disseminated pyrite-chalcopyrite is less than 10% of the mineralised zone, with trace to minor chalcopyrite-sphalerite. The mineralised zone shows strong biotite-chlorite-carbonate-sericite metasomatic alteration.
