Ordinary chondrite, unequilibrated (H3.6; S2; W5)
Find, 1961; 283 kg, a single stone
The Clovis (no. 1) meteorite was uncovered when a plow broke upon striking a heavy and very weathered iron-rich mass (~55 x 54 x 60 cm). Observations of the interior reveal prominent and distinct chondritic textures with usually small (0.5 mm) olivine/pyroxene chondrules present in a 2:1 volumetric ratio. Both olivine (Fa1-28) and pyroxene (Fs1-22) were quite variable as is characteristic of the unequilibrated type 3 ordinary chondrites. Broken chondrules and various, sometimes glassy inclusions are ubiquitous in the fine-grained, dark matrix. Diopside rims, plagioclase, and spinel are less abundant, but still readily observed. Prominent opaques include primary Fe-Ni metal, troilite, and lesser ilmenite. Other phases — sometimes quite minor — but indicative of the rich variety of inclusions include fassaite, anorthic plagioclase, tridymite, and chlorapatite. Weatherates (Fe-oxides and carbonates) are common with the result that the original inventories of troilite and Fe-Ni metal have altered and reduced .
Clovis (no. 1) is the most massive recovered H3.6 chondrite and, indeed, the 3rd most massive of over 2,500 unequilibrated ordinary chondrites recovered by the end of August 2015. Only the NWA 869 L3-6 chondrite and the Sahara 02500 L3 chondrite are more massive among recovered unequilibrated ordinary chondrites. The main mass is with the U.S. National Museum (Smithsonian) in Washington, D.C.
What's in a name? 'Clovis (no. 2)' is a rather large (41.3 kg) but slightly less impressive L6 chondrite which was found not too far away only two years later (1963). In the older literature, the name 'Clovis (a)' occasionally appears for Clovis (no.1). The Grady (1933) and Grady (1937) meteorites had been previously recovered in Curry County so that distinguishing fragments of the various meteorites which have fallen over past decades and centuries has required additional studies.
