Part of the Meuse-Vesdre lead-zinc district.
The mine was an iron mine with large amounts of marcasite rather than a lead-zinc mine.
The Savena mine is an iron hat type deposit and the exploitation dates back to 1612. The first workings were shallow and reached a few meters of depth. After time and throughout the centuries, the mine was deepened. In the 19th century, real exploitation started. With 2 shafts of about 130 meters deep, pyrite and galena were mined. In 1947, the workings were stopped. The locality has been converted into a water pumping and treatment plant, producing around 30,000 m³ of consumption water a day.
SAVENA stands for "Société Anonyme des Mines de Pyrites de Vedrin".
The mine has probably had other names previous to Savena, but nothing could be found on this, yet.
