Lower-Middle Ordovician ironstone deposit.
"The Moncorvo Ironstone present some unusual characteristics, such as the lack of ooids, an uncommon mineralogy, and a stratigraphic thickness that can reach over >45 m, a remarkable feature for an ironstone. Our investigation reveals that this iron-rich sequence is distributed in two distinct marine environments: an inner shelf and a middle to distal shelf. Each environment has a unique mineral assemblage. Despite the influence of metamorphism and deformation, evidence suggests that much of the mineralogy and texture of this deposit still preserve characteristics of the original sediments." (Urbano et al., 2025).

Sedimentar marinha. Singenética, metamórfica. A génese primitiva é sedimentar, com mineralização ferrífera limonítica ou siderítica, que passou por metamorfismo a especularite, martite e magnetite. Sedimentar detrítica
3. Descrição geológica:
Depósitos de Cabeço de Mua, Carvalhosa, Pedrada, Cotovia e Apriscos formados por bancadas de minério de ferro interestratificados em quartzitos, psamitos e xistos; eventos caledónicos; eluviões e coluviões (Quaternário)
4. Geologia local:
Flanco setentrional do sinclinório de Moncorvo a que corresponde a Serra do Reboredo em cujas cristas, onde domina o arenigiano (formação quartzítica), ocorrem os depósitos metamórficos de ferro em blocos tectónicos separados por falhas NNE
5. Geologia regional:
Metassedimentos do Paleozóico (Câmbrico, Grupo do Douro; Ordovícico, Arenigiano, Lanviraniano e Landeiliano; Silúrico). Depósitos de Cobertura. Granitóides Hercínicos
6. Mineralizações principais: martite, especularite, magnetite (ferro magnético)
7. Mineralizações secundárias: goethite (minério de ferro acicular), limonite, pirite
8. Distribuições: maciça estratificada, semi-maciça, bandada, irregular
9. Morfologias: estratiforme, aluvionar
10. Gangas: quartzo, sericite, andaluzite
11. Rochas encaixantes: quartzitos, xistos, psamitos
