The Shire of Mundaring is found on the eastern fringe of the Perth metropolitan area, covers 645 square kilometres, with a population of 35 097 (2006). It sits on the western fringe of the Yilgarn Craton in an area known as the Darling Scarp (Darling Range). The shire is hilly, about one third is covered in forest, the remainder residential, agricultural and orchards.

Attractions include the Mundaring Weir and No1 Pump Station Museum, with its links to the Goldfields around Kalgoorlie. Also food outlets, craft shops, art galleries, heritage listed hotels, and picnic sites in the John Forrest National Park and Lake Leschenaultia.

The shire sits on a laterite cap of bauxite, and no specimens are generally seen.
