The Hamrefjell locality is protected as a natural site ("naturreservat" in Norwegian) of geological value (part of the Oslo Graben) since 16 November 1984, and all forms of collecting are strictly forbidden.
The nature reserve has been established to conserve an area with interesting geology due to contact metamorphism (ekerite, marble, and hornfels).
It is located near Lake Eikeren, so old labels may refer to this lake (Hamrefjell, Eikeren).
