Baraboo is a city and the county seat of Sauk County. It is in the center of the Baraboo Syncline, the limbs of which beautifully expose Proterozoic quartzite in many outcrops, most notably Devil's Lake State Park. The quartzite is interleaved with phyllite, and illustrates many basic principles of structural geology. The area is a mecca for geology field trips. In addition to the common minerals, the area hosts a few unusual mineral occurrences. A vein of lazulite (contains significant nickel and cobalt) was found cutting through quartzite, on a talus slope above Devil's Lake, 10 km south of Baraboo.
