A limestone mine with associated kilns for lime production, first documented in 1751, but probably started already in the middle of the 17th century. Initially quarried from the surface, the deposit was worked from an underground mine since 1854. After the mine had been closed in 1985, the kilns and the plant, parts of which are very ancient, were preserved and converted into an industrial history monument.
Some specimens that are vaguely labelled as coming from a quarry near Herold are actually from the nearby Venusberg quarry (see separate entry).
