The Shire of Moora is 180 kilometres north of Perth in the northern wheatbelt region. It covers 3,767 square kilometres and has a population of 2 561 (2011). The main town is Moora itself, but the shire also contains the smaller towns of Watheroo and several hamlets.
The area was first settled by Europeans in 1846. The economy is cereal growing/sheep, and consequently most of the shire is rolling wheat fields. The shire is on the eastern boundary of the biologically diverse northern heathlands area. The main attraction is tourist drives to view wildflowers in spring.
The shire sits on the western edge of the Yilgarn Craton. A thin sliver of Mesoproterozoic-Neoproterozoic sedimentary rocks called the Moora Group, dissects the shire north to south. Within this is talc hosted by the Noondine Chert and Jingemia Dolomite members.
Fifteen kilometres north of Moora is a quartzite mine (Simcoa Quartz Quarry, Moora Shire, Western Australia, Australia), and the quartzite is smelted into silicon at Kemerton, near Bunbury.
The Warro gas field was discovered in the shire 30 years ago, but remains un-developed, due to the difficulties in using fracking technology.
Local fossickers collect and slab Noondine chert.
