This cinnabar mine (total production about 600 tonnes Hg) was casually discovered in 1838 and the extraction of cinnabar started with an initial great production.
The extraction works lasted up to 1849 when the cinnabar veins were almost completely exhausted.

The mineralization is hosted by phyllites and quartzites (Carnic) of the Massa Unit; the emplacement of mineralized veins is controlled by syn-tectonic (syn-D2) shear zones, having an attitude N150 50SW. Cinnabar is the only Hg mineral, although Angelillis (1972) reported the presence of metacinnabar. Rarely were found in vugs centimetric euhedral crystals of cinnabar (D'Achiardi, 1871). Quartz and minor muscovite and chlorite are the gangue minerals.
