Sultan Mt. dominates the skyline to the west/southwest of the town of Silverton. The mountain is just southwest of Mineral Creek and its associated valley that marks the outer edge of the Silverton Cauldera. The northern half of Sultan Mountain is underlain by a granodiorite stock that intruded Precambrian basement rocks and a pile of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks just outside the Silverton cauldera. Near the top of Sultan Mountain the stock is also flanked by Oligocene volcanoclastic sediments of the San Juan Formation.

Most of the ore deposits in Sultan Mountain are on the north east side near the ring fracture system at the margin of the cauldera.
