Abundant crystals of andalusite variety chiastolite, up to 8 cm in length, were found in spotted cordierite slates of the Santa Monica slate, in a road cut near the end of Altura Road. The crystals are often altered to fine fibrous aggregates of muscovite.
Mineralization is hosted in slates.
