Oolitic iron ore deposit in Jurassic sandstones.
Located about 1.5 km SE of Nammen.
The Wohlverwahrt-Nammen pit is an active mine in the Nammen district of the East Westphalian town of Porta Westfalica in North Rhine-Westphalia. The iron ore of the lower coral oolite is mined here.
The Wohlverwahrt-Nammen pit was created in 1952 by merging the Nammen and Wohlverwahrt pits, whose extraction to the east and west inevitably led to a merging. Today's operator is the company Barbara Erzbergbau.
The field area consists of 16 different mining rights fields with an area of around 75.5 million m² south of Minden and Bückeburg in the west-east stretch from the city of Porta Westfalica to Arensburg near Steinbergen.
North German smelting companies lost interest in the iron ore mined in the early 1990s, but the red ores found a completely new market segment as a concrete aggregate.
The pit is also operated as a stowage mine. Inert mineral substances such as fly ash etc. are installed as backfill materials to stabilize the extensive mining field.
