A steatite mine, operated by the "Steatit-Magnesia AG", a division of the Rosenthal group.
Soapstone (steatite) has been mined in the Johanneszeche pits since 1542. In 1810 the mine became the property of the Bavarian state, and from 1857 onwards various companies carried out economic mining.
The locality is well known for steatite pseudomorphs after quartz, calcite, dolomite, tremolite, and vesuvianite. All of these specimens seem to have been collected in the now long abandoned opencast workings south of the railway line. No finds are reported from the new mine workings that are located a little further north.
Today, only a few mine workings and dumps remain as a reminder of the once flourishing mining industry.
