A small coal deposit, discovered in 1747 and worked until 1846 when most of the coal banks were exhausted. In the early 1950s, prospection works carried out by the French Atomic Energy Commission confirmed the presence of uranium in sedimentary rocks below the coal-bearing layer. The different uranium minerals however, do only occur as microscopic inclusions in the host rocks. Except for the Schaentzel section, where microscopic pitchblende inclusions were discovered, no primary uranium ore appears to be present. Due to the elaborate process needed to extract the uranium, the mines were abandoned soon after.
The deposit consisted of several coal banks (upper Carbonian age, Westphal) intercalating arkose sandstones, that covered a layer of bituminous and uranium-bearing sedimentary rocks. The entire formation had a height of about 100 m and was bordered to the east and to the west by two large fractures of the Vosges fault zone.
Located about 9 km NE of Ribeauvillé.
