Iron mine close to the border between Benalmádena and Mijas municipality. Iron ores are found in karstic cavities in marbles, where aragonite and calcite crystals are also formed after iron hydroxides. The marbles around the mine contain spinel and other skarn minerals.
The deposit includes irregular masses formed in magnesium skarn lenses on dolomitic marble. Hornfels series. Towards the south there exists a contact zone (reverse fault) with weathered and hydrothermalized leucogranites, sillimanite gneiss and alpine peridotites (Mijas Serpentinites). Serpentinites were affected by hydrothermal metamorphism, forming a talc-chrysotile-lizardite deposit.
Although mining was mainly focused on iron ores masses inside marble (limonite, goethite, hematite), just in the neighborhood skarn lenses bearing clinohumite-spinel can be found. Spinel occurs in beautiful assemblage ranging in colour from dark red, pink, lilac, purple and minor black pleonaste. Mineral association includes brucite, dolomite, limonite, ilmenite-geikielite, phlogopite and pyrrhotite.
