Rambla de las Granatillas (Small garnets ravine) is the dry riverbed that drains El Hoyazo crater bassin. Along time it has dragged a huge quantity of loose garnets product of almandine-rich dacite weathering. Its alluvial fan contains almandine placer deposits that were formerly mined for thousands of tons for abrasive uses. 10 to 50 cm thick lenses with a garnet content up to 50% in volume were mechanically digged, magnetically selected, crushed and sifted to obtain 6 tons daily of pure sand-sized almandine garnet during most productive stage at the end of last century.
