One of several pits eventually forming the Lewis Merthyr Colliery, Hafod pit was sunk in 1850, but abandoned because of geological problems before coal was produced.

In the 1870s William Thomas Lewis (later Lord Merthyr) became the owner and deepened the shafts to work the steam coal levels. Subsequently the owners were Lewis Merthyr Consolidated Collieries Limited, with the complex having developed into a unit incorporating Bertie, Trefor, Coedcae and Hafod pits.

In 1918 Bertie and Trefor pits employed 1792 men, Coedcae 556 men and Hafod Nos. 1 and 2 pits 1496 men.

In 1929 Powell Duffryn became the new owners and Coedcae closed. Hafod No.2 pit closed in 1930 and Hafod No.1 pit in 1933

In 1958 Lewis Merthyr colliery was merged with Tymawr. Production finally ceased in 1983.

The small tips associated with Hafod Colliery were landscaped in the 1980s. However, the engine houses and fan room associated with the Bertie and Trefor pits form part of the Rhondda Heritage Park that includes a museum detailing the history of mining here.
