The mine of Serra da Caveira, at 6 km southeast of the village of Grandola, is the most western copper mine of the Iberian Pyrite Belt, geologically identical to the mines of São Domingos and Aljustrel famous for the Roman finds. The mine is known mainly because of the immense slag heap. In 1880, due to the spontaneous combustion of the pyrites a fire broke out that lasted for three years. The mine has three deposits separated by masses of sterile material and due to this configuration in the 19th century it was decided to concentrate efforts on the underground exploitation. This fact alone suggests that in case a pre-Roman exploitation of the grounds took place it would be possible to find traces of it, unlike the mines of São Domingos and Aljustrel that were worked, from the start, on the surface prior to an underground mining (ref.: The exploitation of copper ores and the settlements of Estremadura and south of Portugal during Chalcolithic, Maria da Luz Ferreira Oliveira).

The Iberian Pyrite Belt is known as a mining district of worldwide significance, due to its unusual enormous concentration of big and medium sized mineral deposits. In addition, this fact constitutes the basis of its inescapable reference in many texts concerning mining and metallogenesis. Caveira, Lousal, Aljustrel, Neves Corvo, S. Domingos, Las Herrerias, Concepción, Perrunal-La Zarza, San Telmo, Sotiel, Aznalcóllar, Tharsis, Rio Tinto mights be the most relevant of the big and famous mines belonging to the Iberian Pyrite Belt.
