In the broader area surrounding the settlement, the 27–28 Ma Oligocene Xanthi pluton intrudes into gneisses, amphibolites, and marbles, producing contact metamorphism (e.g., skarn formation) and associated mineralization. Typical mineral assemblages include epidote, quartz, grossular–andradite garnets, specular hematite, and calcite, along with ore occurrences such as molybdenite and magnetite.
Although collector-quality specimens of epidote, quartz, and garnet can indeed be found in the skarn zones near the village of Kimmeria, most of the material circulating in the mineral market actually originates from the skarn zones closer to Lefkopetra.
