Named in 1980 by J. Gittins and D. McKie in honor of John Walter Gregory (27 January 1864, Bow, London, England – 2 June 1932, Megantoni Rapids, Urubamba River, Peru), British explorer and geologist, professor at the University of Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia and University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland. He performed important work on glacial geology and also on the volcanism and structure of the East African Rift system. The Gregory Rift in the Great Rift Valley is also named in his honor.
