Named after its discovery locality, the Talnakh deposit, Noril'sk-Talnakh Ni-Cu camp, Taymyr autonomous district, Russia. At some point the name was chnaged to taimyrite-I, but the name was reverted back to taimyrite in 2022.
Note: "Taimyrite-II" is an unapproved species.
