Named in 1952 by Guido Carobbi, Curzio Cipriani in honor of (Raffaele) Vittorio Matteucci (1846, Ripe, Italy – 16 July 1909, Naples, Italy), volcanologist and fourth Director of the Vesuvius Observatory.
