In allusion to its crystal morphology, being in the HEXAgonal system, and in allusion to its chemical composition, containing TEllurium, antimony (Latin = STIBIum), PAlladium and NICKEL.
Originally described from an undisclosed locality in southwest China (probably the Yangliuping deposit).
