In the 1970's a housing development was built atop the summit of Riker Hill, a prominent outcrop of the Hook Mountain (Third Watchung) basalt. This locality was among the very few significant exposures of the mineral-bearing horizons within the Hook Mountain, the last and thinnest of the 3 flood basalt units in the Newark Basin.

Riker Hill is just far enough north to have suffered the grinding effects of Wisconsin glaciation. Consequently, much of the weathered material on the surface of the elevated ridge was removed. Relatively fresh basalt bedrock was at, or very near, the surface over much of the site making blasting necessary for the construction of foundations and utility trenches. Even though these excavations were shallow they produced good specimen material.

Mineralization occurred in amygdaloidal cavities in the basalt.
