Zeolites are abundant in Miocene basalt flows along a hairpin turn on Highway 19 northeast of the town of Spray, in the Umatilla National Forest, Wheeler County, Oregon. The site was first found in the early 1960's by Al McGuinness and later rediscovered by Rudy Tschernich in 1969. The site is named on Forest Service maps after the small creek near the hairpin turn. In 1974 the road was widened and the zeolite-rich boulders dumped over the bank made easy collecting for many years.
Pockets commonly ranged from 6 to 15 centimeters with some reaching a meter long. Pockets in the boulders were so rich that many pockets would be encountered while trying to extract one pocket. Whole boulders were removed due to the richness of the specimens they contain. The best boulders have been removed but good specimens can still be found.
