West Creek is a tributary off the Cuyahoga River. Its headwaters are located in Seven Hills and flows north into Parma and Independence, and then west to Brooklyn Heights into the Cuyahoga River. The majority of the creek lies in the West Creek Reservation maintained by the Cleveland Metroparks. Independence-Parma township boundary.

According to local historian Irene Toth (2012), the West Creek is not named for its position, but named for the West Family who owned approximately 180 acres where Interstate 480 and Interstate 77 intersect. The lands where granted to Charles West, who served as a soldier in the Revolutionary War. Thomas West, his son maintained the acreage along with his wife Susan. The site today besides being a major intersection of two interstates is dominated by hotels and shopping centers in Seven Hills. Their gravestones are tucked away next to Marriot Springhill Suite’s hotel (Toth, 2012).

Charles S. Prosser, a professor at Ohio State University visited several outcrops along West Creek, but at the time, this section of West Creek was called Skinner’s Run. Skinner’s Run, was named for another early settler, Ichabod Lord Skinner. Ichabod Skinner operated a dairy farm where West Creek drains into the Cuyahoga River. It is believed since the locals called the creek here Skinner’s Run, Prosser assumed the whole creek was named Skinner’s Run. Prosser noted that marcasite was found in the cracks in the shale, but the crystals were in fact pyrite.

The outcrops along the creek where documented again by Cushing et al. (1931, p. 43) and like Charles Prosser before him noted several concretions of “marcasite”. Cushing et al. (1931) also noted that the site was called Skinner’s Run.

To make matter’s more confusing, West Creek was also called “Quarry Creek”, as several sandstone quarries were located in Independence Township. Ephraim West, another member of the West Family was an operator of one of the sandstone quarries. Other names included “South Park Creek” and “Glen Creek” as the creek had several tributaries. As a result of the many names surrounding the creek, the name was never firmly established in early topographic maps or atlas maps. The name “West Creek” probably wasn’t firmly established until after the formation of the West Creek Reservation (Schafer, 2008, Toth, 2012).

Carlson (1991, p. 123) noted the locality as “Skinner’s Run”, based on Prosser’s (1912) and Cushing et al. (1932) notes on the pyrite crystals.
